|Johnny Madge organises wine tours too.
Stefano Grilli's La Palazzola is just across the border into Umbria but is only 25 minutes from Casperia where Johnny has his wine bar.
La Palazzola makes Rubino a cabernet/merlot with additions of petit verdot and sometimes montepulciano d'abruzzo (depending on the season) for which Robert Parker has awarded 95 in the past.
There is also Gran Cuvée, a sparkling wine made of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The 2005 vintage was chosen to compete with Italy's famous Franciacorta sparkling wines and came 2nd. Never before has any sparkling wine from central/southern Italy got this near.
Stefano's approach is very personal and his wines have strong personality as a result: unusual verdello white wine and the extraordinary grechetto; great sparkling wines including unique trebbiano, riesling and pink sangiovese; reds of great character such as merlot, shiraz and rubino and some of my favourite Italian dessert wines: Vendemmia Tardiva (gewurztraminer/sauvignon with botrytis); Umbria Bacca Rossa (his own version of Occhio di Pernice) and a staggering Vin Santo.
Johnny can pick you up from Fara Sabina or Poggio Mirteto station if you are coming out from Rome at any time of the morning you wish and then drive on to the winery. Those people staying in Casperia can meet at Johnny's wine bar and proceed from there. The tour will wind up around 15.30.
The tour involves going round the dessert wine cellars, the fermenting tanks and the cellars deep below the winery where the sparkling wines are turned and the red wines can be tasted from the barrel. We then proceed to the tasting room where Stefano's personal selection of cheeses and hams accompanied by bread and walnuts help us taste the wines.
If you are interested in staying in Casperia we highly recommend La Torretta
